The curriculum for American Career College’s Surgical Technology Program provides students with both theoretical and clinical skills. After completion of classroom training, students are placed in a clinical environment for on-the-job training which provides them with the opportunity to enhance their skills.
Surgical Technologists assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. Surgical technologists are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists and circulating nurses.
The daily activities of a Surgical Technologist may include the following duties and responsibilities:
- Help prepare the operating room
- Setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes and solutions
- Assist with patient preparation
- Transport patients to the operating room
- During surgery, pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants
- Operate sterilizers, lights, ad suction machines
- Help operate diagnostic equipment
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 edition, from 2006-2016 employment of Surgical Technologists is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations. Hospitals will continue to be the primary employers of Surgical Technologists (70% of jobs) mainly in operating and delivery room. Much faster employment growth is expected in offices of physicians and in outpatient care centers, including ambulatory surgical centers.
