Massage Therapy is used as a means of treating painful ailments, decompressing tired and overworked muscles, reducing stress, rehabilitating sports injuries and promoting general health. Massage Therapists can work in different settings that include private practice, medical clinics, chiropractic offices, acupuncture clinics, day spas, fitness centers and physical therapists’ offices. You may also provide service to sports teams or sport-related medical facilities.
Daily activities of a Massage Therapist may include the following techniques:
- Thai Massage
- Deep Tissue
- Swedish
- Reflexology
- Aromatherapy
Massage Therapists work by appointment. Before beginning a massage therapy session, therapists conduct an informal interview with the client to find out about the person’s medical history and desired results from the massage.
Massage Therapists must develop a very good rapport with their clients to promote repeat business. Because those who seek a therapist tend to make regular visits, developing a loyal clientele is an important aspect of becoming a successful Massage Therapist.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 edition, from 2006-2016 employment is expected to grow faster than average over the 2006-16 period as more people learn about the benefits of massage therapy. For those seeking flexibility, this occupation includes a large percentage of part-time and self-employed workers.
